Why Timor-Leste?

•Timor-Leste is located 600 km from Australia’s coastline.
• Approximately 46% of Timor-Leste’s population have never had any schooling.
• The illiteracy levels are appalling at rates of 60% in women and 44% in men.
• The population is just over 1,000,000 people with over 50% under 21 yrs old.
• International experience shows that improving levels of education in emerging societies drives economic prosperity.
• Timor-Leste is not presently equipped to educate its young children to international standards.

Why Baucau College?

Baucau College is run by dedicated Australian academics. Each graduate receives a Bachelor of Teaching degree that is accredited by the ACU National. These Timorese graduates received a world recognized degree. Baucau College is the only institution in East Timor producing teachers. In 2009, 60 proud students graduated. Baucau College has the distinction of having the first ever Masters Degree in Education in East Timor history awarded to Jose Mendes in 2008.
